The brief I have choosen to do and why
The brief I have chosen to do is the "A promotion package for the release of an album". Firstly, one of the main reasons I have chosen this brief is because I think its sounds interesting and sounds like a task I would enjoy completing, this is because I am interested in music and music videos and therefore I would like making my own music video. As well as this, I also think that I will enjoy the ancillary tasks.
This then brings me onto the ancillary tasks I have chosen to do and these are ,"A digipak for the album release" and "A website homepage for the band". The reason why I have chosen to do these two ancillary tasks are for different reasons. Firstly, I have never created a digipak in media before and therefore I will be something different, I also think creating a digipak is interesting as I could get inspiration from real artists that are currently in the public eye. Secondly, the reason why I have chosen a website is because, I have never done one of these in media studies before and therefore I can expand my skills and it also means I am not doing something I am comfortable with, also maybe allowing me to explore new media software, however I think both of the ancillary tasks I have chosen will allow me to do these things (expect the digipak may be made on software I have used before). Another reason I have chosen to do this ancillary task (a website) is because, the other ancillary task was a magazine advertisement and I did a music magazine for my AS coursework, and prior to writing this blog, I decided to look at other A-Level media students work to help me decide which brief I wanted to do. And from looking at the different blogs, I discovered that the magazine advertisement task looks very similar to a music magazine cover task I did for my AS coursework and because of this I would feel like I am doing the same task again, meaning by doing the website I would be exploring into different areas, software and skills.
Another reason why I have chosen to do this brief, is because I think I will also enjoy the research and planning side of it, because I have interest in music and music videos, I think I will enjoy researching them and then planning one of my own. However, I think a negative part of this brief, would be that it may be hard to come up with ideas and may also be hard to find music or get permission to use music for the music video. By choosing this brief, it means that I have concentrated on the music industry a lot during all my media coursework (as I made a music magazine for my AS coursework), however this could also be an advantage, as I may know a lot on the industry from previous work.
However I have decided to do this brief for my A2 coursework.

Homework: Reflecting on the 'Adding depth to your shots' video

Unlike most videos, which appear to be on YouTube, this video was on Vimeo. This alone was something new for me as I have never used Vimeo, but I will defiantly set up an account if I choose to carry on Media in A2. This then leads me onto why I found Vimeo good and useful, this is because the web page allows you to have text above and below your video and therefore making it more like a blog, which may be more useful for amateur video makers.
Some of the information that was written above the video was helpful, as it gave positive information on DSLRs and how they are good for 'depth of field'. As well as this, the section of text also informs you on the good features of DSLRs. This can be helpful towards me, as if I choose to carry on with media in A2 and if choose the photo project, this will allow me to understand the great quality of DSLR cameras and maybe encourage me to use one in order for me to get the best result.
However moving onto the video, the main aim is to inform the viewers on the many different ways you can add depth to your shots. Firstly, the video opened with a man talking and welcoming the viewers to "week 11", allowing the viewers to know that there are other blog posts which may be useful to me and the other viewers. The man then does a review of last weeks blog, which was on storyboarding. This allowed me to gain information on storyboarding and informing the viewers of the "dangers" of doing a storyboard and also telling the viewers how to make an "engaging" film. This can also be helpful towards me as I know that the review of storyboarding will always be available for me on this video and I can even most likely get access to the storyboarding blog. It also warns the viewers about storyboarding and helps me to understand the concept of storyboarding before I come to do a storyboard, maybe helping me to stop any disasters from happening.
Another positive of this video, is that it is aimed at 'beginners' who want to add 'quick and easy' depths to their videos.
Moving on, a girl then talks through how to actually get depth into shots. She goes through six different ways and these include: Depth of field, back lightning, foreground elements, perspective, parallax and smoke and haze. The video is very helpful as the girl goes through these six different ways individually as well as showing a real life example. I think this would be helpful towards me as I can see what the different ways look like, due to the examples and therefore this can help me to decide if I want any of these. It also allows me to learn about the different information and details about the six different ways. As well as this it also informs you of the settings needed on the camera in order to get some of these depths of shots. At the end of the video, the people in the video clearly inform the viewer that there will be another blog, which could also be help to amateurs like me. Lastly, a re-view of the six different types depth types, is written below. This is helpful as somebody may not have gotten all the information while watching the video.

Homwork : Reflecting on the filmmaking video

After watching the YouTube video, I have learnt many different and new things you can do with video. Watching this video was helpful towards myself, as if I carry on with media next year and decide to do the video task, I will already have some ideas of how to use equipment and how to create a video just from watching this YouTube video.
Firstly, the YouTube clip starts and the man talking thanks the sponsor of the video (another business), he lets the viewers know what this business is about and by doing this he is referring to other resources which help with making videos, which I can use to help me if needed.
Also in this YouTube video lots of information is included on different pieces of equipment, for example how to use the equipment. As well as this, detail is also given to the many different settings that can be found on a camera and advice is given from the man in the video on what settings should be actually used. This will be helpful towards me, as if I come to make a video for my task I will already have background information on how to the use the camera and what settings to use. This YouTube video also helps me by discovering new pieces of equipment for me and by going into detail on other pieces of equipment for me such as the monopod, which allows you to film in different shots. The man also informs the viewers on the reasons why some of the equipment is good as well as demonstrating how to use these pieces of equipment, which will also be helpful towards me as I will know why some equipment is used and how to use it, due to watching this video.
The clip also shows two men making a small video themselves. Before this they discuss what they want to achieve, then they show the video and then show how they made it. This will also be helpful towards me as it allows me to see how a video is made, what they want to achieve before the video is made and the outcome as well as what it taught them by making this video. During the clip which shows you how the video is made, it informs you of details of the camera, what equipment is being used as well as what shot is being used. This is helpful for me as it can help me see what a completed video looks like and what shots and equipment are useful for video making. As well as seeing the reality of the what they wanted compared to the outcome, their video may also help give me inspiration, if I choose the video tasks in A2.
The man in the video also informs the viewers of how long it took to shoot their video as well as giving advice by telling the viewers to use a storyboard and why they are good to use as well as what equipment they used to make this storyboard. Both these pieces of information are helpful towards me, as I am informed on how long the video took, this maybe helpful as it gives me a rough idea of how long it may take me to make a video. It also informs me before making my video that a storyboard would be a good piece to have in my planning part of the task as well as being good to use to help me while filming my actual video. The storyboard will also be helpful if I make a video as it can help to show my ideas and what I want to achieve.
Lastly, the man talks about editing. Firstly about the software to use (IMovie - available on Macs & Adobe premiere elements - available on Macs and PC). The man also mentions that tutorials for these pieces of software should be available on the webpage for the piece of software or knowledge of the software will be available online. As well as this, also informing the viewers that not a lot of equipment is needed to make a video like theirs and just giving general advice. This would be helpful for me, as it allows me to know what software would be best to edit a video that I have made, also ensuring me that not much equipment will be needed.
